The answer is simple. Rooting is intended to get access to the file system on the device which is not typically accessible. Many software on Google Play demand the device to be rooted in order to be able to use their software  So, here you can see that rooting is important.

However, Rooting your Samsung GALAXY W i8150 violates the guarantee policy of Samsung and will void the warranty. It may also cause your phone to brick or not function anymore. I will not be responsible or liable for any damage it may result to your phone. Root at your own risk!

The Steps of Rooting Galaxy Wonder

you must put the downloaded update.zip onto your external sd card. do not place it inside a folder. then insert back your external sd into your phone. get into recovery mode (turn off your phone. Turn On your phone again by pressing Volume Up + Home Button + Power button all together and wait for the Android with a box logo to appear.)

Then choose apply update from sdcard using the volume up and down, use home button as enter key. Find and choose the download update.zip and confirm using home button. Wait until it finishes updating and reboot your phone.

if it still doesn't work you may try placing the update.zip onto internal sd card. and repeat the process.

If you still can't find the update.zip you might need to install CWM (clockworkmod recovery) first as it provides more options than the stock recovery mode. Download link and installation instruction can be found here.
